Position Description

The Director of Business Development is a key, senior-level full-time position that leads opportunity identification, pipeline development, and capture strategy and implementation for federal research and development contracts. The role is focused on securing competitive awards from the Department of Defense, national labs, and related federal agencies. The position reports to company leadership but is expected to interact and support team members across the organization.  Cyber security and hardware security is a growing field with huge upside – come join us as we work to protect our men and women in uniform as we enter into a new type of future military conflict.

Idaho Scientific’s engineering team is a unique blend of some of the best subject matter experts in embedded and hardware security. The Director of Business Development collaborates with the CTO, who maintains thetechnical product roadmap, to identify funding opportunities to bring the roadmap to life. 

While the Director of Business Development is focused on R&D funding, this role requires close collaborationwith the entire Growth team (sales, marketing, FAE, proposal management).

What You’ll Get to Do:

1. Be the primary driver for R&D opportunity pipeline for the company
• Be the primary external face and brand Ambassador of the Company
• Direct line of regular communication with company leadership
• Own the implementation and updates for the company R&D business strategy
2. Proactively identify, track, and qualify opportunities including SBIR/STTRs, OTAs, BAAs, RFIs, RFPs, and other federal R&D solicitations.
3. Identify and cultivate relationships with key decision-makers within the DoD, defense contractors and stakeholders within all tiers of the supply chain (microelectronics OEMs, board manufacturers, Tier 2 LRU/WRA integrators, Tier 1 platform Primes).
4. Lead capture strategy: develop win themes, teaming strategies, and value propositions that position Idaho Scientific competitively.
5. Support proposal development – including shaping requirements, leading storyboards, reviewing drafts, and ensuring compliance.
6. Coordinate closely with engineering to ensure technical alignment of proposals with customer requirements.
7. Partner with marketing to develop proposal materials, white papers, and capabilities statements.
8. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including CTO office, engineering, application engineers, and marketing to align funding opportunities with product roadmap plans and market needs
9. Monitor and analyze market trends, competitor activities, DoD Policy and Requirement updates and industry developments to identify new business opportunities and inform strategic planning
10. Prepare and present accurate business development reports, forecasts and performance analyses to senior management
11. Represent the company at industry events, Industry Days, trade shows and conferences to promote our solutions and expand our network

Required Qualifications & Experience

• US Citizenship
• Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Business Management or related field
• 5+ years of demonstrated success in DoD business development, capture management, or program development
• Proven track record in identifying and winning R&D funding opportunities 
• Strong understanding of the DoD procurement process, including compliant proposals/quotes and T&Cs to protect background IP
• Ability to work independently and to create value without prescriptive direction
• Strong understanding of DoD procurement, contracting mechanisms, and funding pathways
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills – ability to craft persuasive proposals, white papers, and executive briefings.
• Ability to learn basic technical concepts and accurately communicate them to a general audience
• Ability to listen, ask clarifying questions and then know how to direct potential customers to the right Idaho Scientific resource for additional information
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Excel, SharePoint)
• Willingness to travel up to 75% of the time, though normal is expected to be closer to 25%

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

• Active or ability to get a US Security Clearance
• Experience working with SBIR Phase I → II → III transitions
• Familiarity with DoD innovation organizations (DIU, AFWERX, Army Futures Command, NavalX)
• Established network within key R&D agencies (DARPA, AFRL, ONR, ARL, IARPA)
• Existing relationships with potential Department of Defense and defense contractor customers
• MBA or advanced degree

Location

• The preferred work location is at Idaho Scientific headquarters in Boise, Idaho or based out of other Idaho Scientific offices in Salt Lake City, Utah or Baltimore, Maryland
